Boy Scouts salute women at awards dinner

The Greater New York Councils Boy Scouts of America sponsored its annual Salute to Women in Leadership Dinner presented by Master of Ceremonies, Philippa Karteron, President and CEO of Galleria Noire.

The Boys Scouts saluted five outstanding women this year including Clorinda Antonucci as the JFK Airport nominee, Director of New Business, Corporate Loss Prevention Associates; Cheryl Wills, Veteran Anchor Spectrum News NY1, and author; Emily Lin, President Lin Associates Architects; Tonya Cantlo-Cockfield, Assistant Counsel to Brooklyn Borough President; and Priscilla Dolce, Event Specialist, Russos on the Bay.

Ms. Karteron could not find enough words to praise the personal character, social responsibility, and professionalism of all the women awarded, as well as paying tribute to the many other women who attended the event including those from the Queens Chapter of the Links, and sisters of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

“This is an extraordinary evening given what’s going on in the world. Women are determined to speak out. Our women honored here are committed to leadership in government, education arts and business.” Karteron said.

She added “We are making a future with our children by partnering with the people here that help us do this. We thank you for your friendship and partnership to help our endeavors increase”.

Michael Sibilia, Boy Scout Queens Council President, also thanked everyone that contributes to development of the boys and girls of the Boy Scouts programs. He spoke about the news that girls will be invited to join between the ages of 5-18 in 2018 and 2019 even though scouting has been coed since 1971.

He spoke highly about how contributions by the supporting members and friends have helped grow the volunteer after school programs and the summer camps. Recognizing the impact of women, he said “Nearly 40% of the adult leaders in local councils are women whose responsibilities range from den leaders to district chairs.”

Sibilia thanked Philippa for her leadership in helping to raise $105,000 to support scouting. “We thank you for your inspiring support” as he presented her with a recognition award for her work.

The close of the evening was also exciting as everyone waited to see who would win the raffle for tickets from Jet Blue. As the ticket was pulled and number announced, a surprised and happy Michael Brady, Assistant VP Of Development and Alumni Relations, Vaughn College was the lucky winner.
