Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
AFKLM leads way to reduced CO2 footprint
AirFrance KLM Cargo.Air
France KLM Martinair Cargo
has launched the world’s fi rst
Sustainable Aviation Fuel
(SAF) program for the airfreight
industry, enabling
freight forwarders and shippers
to reduce their CO emissions.
By investing in the Cargo
SAF Program, customers will
not only help pioneer the use of
SAF in our industry, but will
also scale up the SAF market,
contributing to a cleaner future
for air transport.
According to Adriaan den
Heijer, EVP of Air France-
KLM Cargo & Managing Director
of Martinair, “Our
commitment to the reduction
of CO2 emissions is one of the
fundamentals of our cargo
strategy. The launch of a SAF
programme for airfreight is a
considerate step of an ambitious
sustainability roadmap
the next years. I would like to
invite all our customers for
joining us in creating a more
sustainable cargo future. “

America, given the criticality
of jet fuel to reliable fl ight operations
as a cost item, airlines must
be the decision makers in fuel
supply chain management.
Airlines welcome support for
efforts to make SAF fully commercially

-SAF almost has identical
chemical and physical characteristics
as conventional jet
fuel. They are safely mixed to
varying degrees but no more
than 50% by volume (according
to current standards) to
meet the same quality and
safety requirements.
This is why KLM, together
with a few partners, is building
a fully SAF-dedicated
plant to produce its own SAF,
scheduled to open in 2023 in
the north of the Netherlands.

SAF facts
-The aviation sector currently
accounts for 2 to 3%
of global CO2 emissions produced
by human activity. SAF
represents an alternative fuel
for aviation and is currently
the only viable drop-in alternative
to fossil liquid fuels
for powering commercial aircraft.
-SAF is a drop-in fuel,
meaning that no changes are
required in aircraft or engine
fuel systems, distribution infrastructure

SAF-Sustainable aviation
fuel can reduce carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions by up to
80%. More than 40 carriers including
Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa
and Finnair have begun
using the fuel out side of
the U.S. to help shrink their
carbon footprint. Aviation accounts
for about 2% of greenhouse
