KAAMCO July virtual Meeting
HTA, EWR lease, congestion & security issues
The JFK KAAMCO Cargo Committee
held their July meeting. VP Mark Flug of
Cathay chaired the meeting and started
off by asking for more participation by
Kaamco members.
It was reported that the impact of the
Health Terminals Act was beginning to
take place. Some companies have sent
letters to terminals with notification of increase
to some of carriers not much on
cargo, more to terminals and not as much
on cargo.
This law will have a significant increase
to cost of services one member said. The
Chamber of Commerce is involved seeking
answers to many questions about implementation
and funding but has not yet
received updates to these questions. Flug
referred any questions to either the Chamber
of Roger Scott of Kaamco.
Kaamco members have been in touch
with VP IATA Doug Lavin about contact
tracing. Given the spread of the variant,
there have been worldwide conversations,
and here specifically about mandating
vaccines foe international travelers before
coming to the U.S. This would be a major
change for current flying recommendations
and restrictions but Flug pointed out
that more input is needed before agreeing
to this which would include collecting personal
data that needs to be protected.

Flug noted that there is proposed legislation
On Congress for more baggage
refund fees and suggested that everyone
be aware of this and react accordingly.
With the increasing resumption of live
events despite the variant, Flug promoted
the Kaamco Dinner Dance on November
19 but the big location reveal yet to come!
Cargo Committee
Chairman Brian Cooley updated everyone
on the need for FOD control which
in cargo means f=getting all follies, skids,
ULDs out of working space and returned
to owners. He mentioned the monthly Port
FOD effort and recommended others to
get involved to see for themselves what
needs to be done. Need for carriers and
handlers to make sure your pallets are collected.
Congestion is sill a problem with truck
waiting times. It is common cargo knowledge
that workforce shortage, increased
security ensures, weather conditions all
contribute to the congestion that varies
from building to building and time to time.
Cooley mentioned the recent leasing
of buildings 339&340 at Newark to Amazon.
He mentioned that this just came up
and everyone is just trying to tackle this in
ways we can but it is a definite concern.
He expressed great concern on behalf
of the almost 2 dozen companies currently
housed in those buildings. He said this will
create a headache because there really
is no place for these cargo related companies
and airlines to go at EWR. There
4 AIRPORT VOICE, AUGUST 2021
is no other ground handling facilities we
are aware of. Saying, “ We need to take
a close look at this. Some of those carriers
might decide to come here and add to
frustration we already see.”
Phil Jensen of WFS said, he hopes for
more info soon since this lease impacts
cargo movement at Newark. A lot of airlines
do not know who to call or have an
up to date Port contact list. Everyone at
both airports needs to know about what
is available. What is port doing or assistance?
Are there pass through operators?
Don’t know who does what with turnover
last three years. It is important to have a
cargo contact from Port contact with definition
of responsibilities to help in getting
answers.
Cargo Committee truck representative
Pete Di said that his people are exploring
all options when it comes to the impact the
loss of these building may have on cargo
off airport transportation and to freight forwarding
community.
CLPA Joe Clabby commented that
K9’s security is not working out as well
as expected. He has been in touch with
TSA and participated in a good meeting
and he recommends that anyone in security
needs to be in attendance at the next
meeting to voice thoughts
On the HTA, he and other companies
are still trying to understand all the details
and sees conflicting terms of the legislation
as it pertains to airport covered workers.
Collectively, we have taking legal approach
that this is a passenger terminal
not cargo impact. A non-issue on cargo
side he said.
Clabby has been the staying force behind
the creation of the 911 memorial at
JFK. He thanked the Port and team for
fabulous job in creating the memorial for
the 20th. Anniversary service at Building
14, Friday September10th.
Clabby also mentioned the upcoming
Chamber of Commerce Golf event on
September 13, Brookville Country Club.

Best airport bathroom contest
JFKIAT Terminal 4 is a finalist
The newly renovated restroom in the
Arrivals Hall has been named a finalist
in the Cintas America’s Best Restroom
Contest. Located on the east side of the
Customs Arrival Hall and designed by
Woods Bagot, the restroom is designed
to be easy to find, easy to clean, and, at
900 sq ft, spacious. “Woods Bagot’s design
for our newly renovated restrooms
is the latest initiative in line with the Port
Authority’s goal to make JFK a worldclass
airport,” Roel Huinink, president
and CEO of JFKIAT, told TPG. “We are
very pleased that the renovations are
being considered as a finalist for this
recognition, and we hope that our customers
enjoy the new look and feel of
the space.”
The entrance is framed by teal backpainted
glass, and embedded within
these frames are graphics of iconic New
York City landmarks that convey a sense
of place. A teal penny tile feature wall
draws users in, and life-size man and
woman icons etched into a glass front
act as wayfinding. This big, bold design
makes the restroom impossible to miss,
and will become the new standard for all
restrooms at T4. Voting is taking place
now until August 20. One lucky winner
with $2,500 in Cintas products and services.
